Quick Guide to Fiber Optic Cable

What is a fiber optic cable?

A network cable which contains strands of glass fiber inside it can be referred to as an fiber optic cable. Most commonly, they are used in networking that requires high performance and modern telecommunications.
Fiber optic cables are superior to old-fashioned wired cables as they provide better bandwidth performance over long distances and that is why today most of the world’s television, internet and telephone lines use them.

How do fiber optic cables function?

Fiber optic cables are made out of one or more threads of glass. Each of these threads is very thin and at the centre of each thread is called a core. The core is what allows the light to pass through it. Around the core is a layer of glass which serves to bounce the light inwards in order to minimize the loss of signal.

The fiber optic cables transfer signals by utilizing light pulses which are created by small lasers or LED’s (light-emitting diodes). Two main types of fiber optic cables exist and they are the single mode and the multi mode fiber cables.

Why are the fiber optic cables so good?

Fiber optic cables are much more strong and reliable than the copper wiring ones and they work at a much higher capacity. This makes them ideal for network bandwidth transfers.

There is also no need for signal boosters as light can move much further through them. They are more stable and resilient as they are not prone to interferences. Glass and fiber don’t need any additional shielding.

ADSS fiber optic cables
Probably the most economical of all are the ADSS fiber optic cables (All-Dielectric Self-supporting) that work perfectly for installation in distribution as do in transition environments.

They are the most economical ones as the installation is done in a single pass and it requires no support or message wire. They work well in all environments and are thus the perfect choice for whatever your needs are.

Aerial Fiber Optic cable
The most common of fiber optic cables is the Aerial Fiber Optic cable. It is very common in communications and you can probably see them hanging in the poles all around you.

It is made out of a number of different materials in order to withstand the elements and to prevent the theft of it. It has great mechanical performances, a small diameter, is self supporting and easy to install.

Armored fiber optic cable
Armored fiber optic cable is also called the outdoor fiber optic cable as it has an additional layer or protection made out of steel. It has gel filled loose tubes and dry, highly absorbance polymers which provide absolute protection against water.

All of this makes it highly suitable for Aerial, duct and underground conduit environments. It can also just as well be used for outside video security,Datacom’s, broadcasting or telecommunication.

Glass fiber optic cable
Glass fiber optic cables name comes from the fact that the their fiber is made out of glass. This is why they are more delicate than the rest and cannot be cut, repaired or spliced. They are fairly versatile and resilient though and that makes them the ideal choice harsh and hostile environments.

They can sustain high temperatures, mechanical stress or even corrosive chemicals which is why they are in such high demand.

Fiber optic cable manufacturers

It can sometimes be hard to chose the best fiber optic cable manufacturers as they are all fairly similar. Different criteria and weightage must be considered before you make your choice.
